Whittier Birthplace is hosting a series of story and craft times for preschoolers and their caregivers this summer. The free events are Tuesdays from 10 to 11 a.m., through Aug. 19, under a tent on the grass next to the Little Free Library kiosk, at Whittier Birthplace, 305 Whittier Road. Participants are advised to bring blankets and park under the apple trees or on Whittier Road. “Our target is children ages 3 to 5 but older and younger kids are welcome,” Executive Director Kaleigh Pare Shaughnessy said.

Two Area Poets to Read at River Bards Poetry Series July 9

Two poets, John Burciaga and Peter Bryant, headline the final night of Creative Haverhill’s spring River Bards Poetry Series. It takes place Wednesday, July 9, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at HC Media Studio 101, 2 Merrimack St., Haverhill. Burciaga is a Mexican-American originally from the Missouri Ozarks. He is the inaugural poet in residence at the Newburyport Art Association and host of the monthly Poetry & Pizza series. His initiative, Poetry in Public Places, brings printed verse to coffee shops, art galleries and local businesses.

NFI Massachusetts Plans Corn Hole Tournament

NFI Massachusetts is looking for accurate bean bag tossers for its upcoming corn hole tournament. The first NFI Summer Toss is Wednesday, July 30, at 4:30 p.m., at Haverhill High School, 137 Monument St. Prizes go to the top four teams. Heavenly Dog and Catering will be on hand to provide refreshments. The cost is $50 for a team of two. All proceeds benefit the NFI Structured Outpatient Addiction Program in Haverhill.

Ladies Tea at the Groveland Senior Center Benefits Council on Aging

The Friends of the Groveland Council on Aging is hosting a Ladies Tea featuring cold strawberry soup, scones, savory and sweet breads, finger sandwiches and a variety of hot teas. The event tea takes place Thursday, July 17, at 2 p.m., at the Groveland Congregational Church, 4 King St., Groveland. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. Classical guitarist Scott Ouellette provides entertainment. Tickets, which must be purchased by Thursday, July 10, are $25 each. All proceeds benefit the Friends group in its efforts to support the senior center.

Kids Papermaking Classes at Museum of Printing July and August

Children from pre-school to high school can try their hand at papermaking at a series of workshops offered by Haverhill’s Museum of Printing. Mindy Mitrano, who operates Mindy Paper Art Studio in Haverhill, will be on hand on six Tuesday mornings at 10 a.m. The dates are July 8, 15 22, and 29 and Aug. 5 and 12 at the Museum of Printing, 15 Thornton Ave., Haverhill. “Participants are welcome to come to more than one session,” Mitrano said. “I will adjust the activity for the ages of the kids.”
Children are encouraged to bring small amounts of found scrap paper from home to create new sheets as well as a small amounts of natural materials or interesting found flat objects like leaves and ribbon.

Boys & Girls Club of Greater Haverhill Plans Alumni Weekend, Celebrating125th Birthday

The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Haverhill is planning its Alumni Weekend, a reunion of former “Club kids,” this September. It takes place Friday and Saturday, Sept. 5 and 6, in celebration of the Club’s 125th anniversary. Former members of all ages are invited to take part, where they can reconnect with old friends and reminisce on their time at the Club around various activities, including a Friday networking breakfast, brunch celebrating the Club’s female alumni on Saturday morning and 100’s and 21 basketball tournaments Saturday afternoon. The Boys & Girls Club will also unveil a collection of memorabilia, showcasing the Club’s 125-year history, in the lobby of the Club’s building at 55 Emerson St., in downtown Haverhill.

Sharks Invade Groveland’s Langley-Adams Library July 7-9

In honor of the 50th anniversary of the movie “Jaws,” sharks are invading the Langley-Adams Library in Groveland. Frank Mandosa will present a hybrid program on all things related to the blockbuster movie as well as sharks in particular including fun facts, trivia and, for those attending in person, shark-themed snacks next Monday, July 7, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Langley-Adams Library, 185 Main St., Groveland. Those attending virtually will be sent a link once registered. On Tuesday, July 8, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Christopher Shaw Myers gives an in person celebration of his uncle, the late actor Robert Shaw, who played the shark hunter Quint in the famous movie. Myers, of Fairfield, Conn., has written a biography on his famous uncle.

Haverhill Residents 60 and Up May Access Free Produce this Summer

Haverhill residents over 60 once again have access to free produce this summer through a local harvest distribution program run by AgeSpan of Lawrence. A local farm will set up tables of fresh produce at Haverhill’s Citizens Center, 10 Welcome St., every Wednesday so that seniors can shop for what they prefer. The program gets underway Wednesday, July 9, at 10 a.m. and runs approximately eight weeks. Residents must be a member of the Haverhill Council on Aging to participate in the community market program. ‘Let’s Paddle Haverhill’ Takes to Crystal Lake Saturday

Canoeists and kayakers have the opportunity to take the waters of Crystal Lake at a Let’s Paddle Haverhill event. Participants with their watercraft are advised to gather Saturday, June 28, at 9:30 a.m., at the Crystal Lake Pump House for a group launch at 10 a.m. Robert E. Moore, Haverhill’s environmental health technician, leads the two-hour tour. Access to the lake is just after 67 Crystal Lake Road, Haverhill, where a sign indicates the entrance. Paddlers are advised they must wear an U.S. Coast Guard-approved life vest. Youth under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Carpooling is encouraged because the parking lot has just 20 spaces.
