Meditation for a Happy You Wednesday Mornings at Haverhill Citizens Center

The Haverhill Council on Aging is helping people work on gaining a sense of calm, peace and balance at a meditation class tomorrow. “Meditation for a Happy You” takes place tomorrow and every Wednesday, beginning at 10 a.m., at the Haverhill Citizens Center, 10 Welcome St., Haverhill. Haverhill Council on Aging Offers ‘Gothic Ghost Tales’ Tuesday

The spirit of the Halloween season is coming to the stage with a presentation of “Gothic Ghost Tales by Candlelight.”

Performer Ruth Parisi of Waterfall Productions will bring to life a series of 19th and 20th century tales of the supernatural written by women. The theatrical adaptations will take place at the Haverhill Council on Aging, 10 Welcome St., Tuesday, Oct. 17 from noon-1 p.m. Reserve a seat by calling Paola at the Haverhill Council on Aging at 978-374-2390 ext. 3916.

Haverhill Recreation Dept. Plans Safe Sitter Babysitting Course

The Safe Sitter Babysitting course is designed to prepare students in grades 6 through 8 on how to stay safe when they are home alone, watching younger siblings or babysitting for other children. The class is sponsored by the Haverhill Recreation Department. An instructor will lead participants on Saturday, Oct. 21, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Haverhill Citizen Center, 10 Welcome St. Teachers will use games and role-playing exercises to teach students how to prevent unsafe situations and what to do during power failures or other emergencies.

Whittier Birthplace Invites Homeschooled Students for a Freeman Trail Hike Thursday

Homeschooled students and their families are invited to take a trip back in time as they get to know poet John Greenleaf Whittier during a short hike through the woods and fields around his birthplace. Students ages 6-12 are invited to join the hike along the Donald C. Freeman Memorial Trail Thursday, Oct. 12, from 10 a.m. to noon. At each stop along the half mile trek students will read some of Whittier’s poetry and collect leaves and other items for the arts and crafts projects at the end. Students are advised to dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes.

Haverhill Firefighting Museum’s Annual Chili Cookoff Oct. 21

It’s getting hot, hot, hot at the Haverhill Firefighting Museum with the annual Chili Cookoff. Chefs are invited to bring their best recipes to the museum where taste-testing visitors will decide which spicy dishes are best. For a $10 admission fee, there will also be door prizes, a silent auction and more. The Haverhill Firefighting Museum’s annual Chili Cookoff brings on the heat Saturday, Oct. 21, from 6-8 p.m., at the museum, at 75 Kenoza Ave., Haverhill.

Moriarty on the Hot Seat During Haverhill Rotary’s Roast and Toast

A local pillar of the community will be in the hot seat during a “Roast and Toast” fundraiser. The Haverhill Rotary Club will serve up compliments and comedic jabs at fellow Rotarian George Moriarty during what promises to be an entertaining night. One highlight of the night is Matt Belfiore’s premiere Rotary video that he describes as “more insane than anything you’ve seen yet.” It features a familiar cast of characters from Historic Highlands’ Lynda Brown to Northern Essex Community College President Lane A. Glenn. A buffet dinner will be served. Tickets are $75 each or $700 for a table of 10.

Free Tour of Historic Bradford Burial Ground Takes Place Saturday

Buttonwoods Museum volunteer Doug Jenkins conducts a tour this Saturday of Haverhill’s first site listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. The Bradford Burial Ground, founded in 1665, is steeped in history. Now owned by the city, veterans from the King Philip’s War of 1675 through World War II are buried there. The tour is free and no registration is required. Those interested should meet at the Salem Street entrance Saturday, Sept.

Art in Bloom Designer Cindy Knight Provides Atkinson Garden Club Demonstration

Cindy Knight, a member of the Atkinson Garden Club and a Museum of Fine Arts’ Art in Bloom designer will recreate six to eight of her designs during the next open meeting of the Atkinson Garden Club. A drawing will take place for some of the designs with proceeds benefiting the garden club scholarship and community beautification projects. The meeting takes place Wednesday, Oct. 4, at 1 p.m., at the Atkinson Community Center, 4 Main St., Atkinson, N.H. Admission is $10 and light refreshments will be served.
