Podcast: West Newbury’s NEER – North Discusses Horse, Mule Rescue Mission Saturday

A local organization that rescues horses, donkeys and mules and looks to find them “forever homes” plans to share its mission and needs during an open house this Saturday. West Newbury’s New England Equine Rescue – North, known as NEER-North for short, has been on a mission since 2008 helping horses and horse owners, in crisis. Founder Mary Martin, who was a recent guest on WHAV’s morning program, gave listeners an overview of events Saturday. “We’ll have snacks and coffee and homemade cookies and we’ll have some of our NEER gear available for sale. We also have a local author, Ginger Lane, who wrote a little book for us, children’s book, “The Story of NEER North: Through The Eyes of Mable the Donkey.” Mable was our mascot who recently passed.

D’Empanadas Restaurant, Featuring Latin Foods, Opens in Haverhill

D’Empanadas, Haverhill’s newest restaurant specializing in a variety of Latino-inspired foods, opened with a ribbon cutting ceremony last week on Hilldale Avenue in Haverhill. This is owner Miguel Del Valle’s second location, having opened his first in 2015 in Lynn. He and his family emigrated from the Dominican Republic. Rep. Linda Dean Campbell was on hand to present a House citation recognizing the restaurant as the community’s newest Latino-owned business. “Your presence here is a fantastic and welcome addition to our restaurant offerings,” the citation added.

Pentucket Players Present ‘Evita’ Friday, Saturday, Sunday at Haverhill City Hall

Delayed more than a year because of the pandemic, Pentucket Players is presenting “Evita” this weekend at Haverhill City Hall auditorium. Pentucket Players expected a two-week delay back on March 15, 2020 while originally rehearsing, “Evita.” The two-week hiatus lasted for months because of precautions related to COVID-19. “Evita” chronicles the rise to fame and notoriety of Eva Peron, iconic wife of Argentinian dictator, Juan Peron, in the early 1950s. The multi-generational, diverse cast features performers from the Greater Merrimack Valley area. The play takes place Friday and Saturday, Nov.

Stacks Opens in Downtown Haverhill with Craft Sandwiches, Bar With ‘Booze-Infused Milkshakes’

Haverhill’s newest restaurant, Stacks, opened to the public Thursday with craft sandwiches and 24 beers or ciders on tap. The 122 Washington St. restaurant is operated by brothers Paul and Anthony Tomacchio in the space formerly occupied by the Lasting Room. Besides food and a full bar, Stacks highlights its “over-the-top booze-infused milkshakes.”

At a ribbon cutting by the Merrimack Valley Chamber, Stacks received recognition from elected officials including Rep. Andy X. Vargas and Haverhill City Councilors Colin F. LePage and Timothy J. Jordan.

Northern Essex Students to Present ‘Tiny Beautiful Things’ on Special Outdoor Stage

Northern Essex Community College students are performing “Tiny Beautiful Things” this week at a specially adapted outdoor stage. The college’s Performing Arts and Communication Department presents the play, based on a book by best-selling author Cheryl Strayed and adapted for the stage by actor, director, producer and screenwriter Nia Vardalos. Besides outside socially-distanced performances, patrons can warm up to hot chocolate, hot cider and apple cider donuts. Performances take place Thursday, Nov. 4, at 4 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, Nov.

Sing Along Now, ‘Santa Claus is Coming to Town;’ 57th Annual VFW Santa Parade Nov. 21

Nothing can keep Santa Claus stuck at the North Pole this season. Despite rumors to the contrary, the jolly old man is most certainly coming to Haverhill for the 57th Annual VFW Santa Parade Sunday, Nov. 21—the Sunday before Thanksgiving. The VFW Santa Parade Committee voted to have a traditional parade. It will feature as many marching bands as will perform on parade day.

Methuen Police Win Friendly Rivalry with Firefighters—All to Benefit Methuen Field of Honor

Methuen Police were the victors in a friendly rivalry with the Methuen Fire Department, raising nearly $6,000 for the upcoming and first-ever Methuen Field of Honor. The real winners are veterans in need who will be helped with the money raised to support the Office of Veterans Services. As WHAV reported earlier, The Methuen Field of Honor will see American flags flying in front of Nevins Library A ceremony kicks off the display Saturday, Oct. 2, at 9, the launch of the Fourth Annual Methuen Day. Veterans Service Officer Paul Jensen suggested the competition between the fire and police departments to see who could raise the most money to support the city’s goal of recognizing the nearly 5,000 veterans who live in Methuen.

Haverhill Public Library Get Lit Book Club Discusses ‘Educated’ Thursday

The Haverhill Public Library will have an in-person, outdoor meeting of its “Get Lit” book club this Thursday. Get Lit, a social book club designed for 20- and 30-something readers in the Greater Haverhill area, plans to discuss “Educated” by Tara Westover. The meeting takes place Thursday, Sept. 9, from 6:30-8 p.m., on the side of the library facing Ginty Boulevard and the concrete war memorial.
