The Engineering shop was spared, while Construction Craft Laborer will merge into a revised Masonry program and three other shops will eventually close following Wednesday night’s vote by the Whittier Regional Vocational Technical High School Committee. Early Education and Care and Design and Visual Communications will close in 2027 after the few remaining students in the program graduate, pending approval from the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Superintendent Maureen Lynch argued closing or changes in programs with declining enrollment are necessary so that resources can be targeted to growth areas. “There is a significant need for education teachers and early education teachers, there’s no denying that part. The issue really is having less than 10 students run in the trade area when I have other trade areas that really need those resources,” Lynch said.

Two Haverhill Schools Up For Borrowing Requests Tuesday Before City Council
|
Haverhill city councilors tonight are expected to approve two school-related capital borrowing requests—one to plan for the future of the John Greenleaf Whittier School and the other to pay for design and planning of a new Silver Hill School roof. The city plans to borrow $1.2 million for a state-required feasibility study of the long-sought replacement of John Greenleaf Whittier School. The Concord Street middle school won state approval more than a year ago to enter into an eligibility period that could lead to partial state reimbursement. The study goes beyond simply deciding whether to repair, replace or add to the school, as School Superintendent Margaret Marotta explained to School Committee members last month. “The study essentially looks at grade allocation, the number so students the building should hold, what the specific components of the building might look like programmatically, where specifically the building might be located, that sort of thing.”
Construction of a new John Greenleaf Whittier School would complete the rebuilding of the city’s four middle schools.

Northern Essex Police Academy Training Recruits in Active Shooter and Hostile Event Response
|
The Northern Essex Community College Police Academy is now training recruits with Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training, called the FBI’s gold standard for use in active attack and shooter events. The ALERRT course is designed to improve the safety and survivability of victims and increase the effectiveness, coordination and resource integration between law enforcement, fire, telecommunication and emergency medical services. “Active Shooter and Hostile Event Response training is critical to ensuring first responders are prepared to act decisively and collaboratively during life-threatening emergencies,” said Municipal Police Training Committee Statewide Director of Active Shooter Hostile Event Response John J. Mazza. “The recent ALERRT train-the-trainer program is imperative in rolling out the most up-to-date curriculum and contributing to the Commonwealth’s mission to advance multi-agency preparedness and community resilience.”
The Municipal Police Training Committee held the four-day intensive Train the Trainer course for instructors last month. The program included classroom time during the day and extensive simulated shooting drills in the evenings.
