Duggan Tells Local Veterans’ Stories in ‘Heroes in Our Midst’

“Heroes in Our Midst,” a new book about local veterans by Tom Duggan, was the focus of discussion during Monday’s Open Mike Show on 97.9 WHAV. Duggan, publisher of the Valley Patriot newspaper, said his newspaper honors a local veteran on the front page of each issue. It is a tradition going back to the Valley Patriot’s launch in 2004. The book is a collection of 134 stories and interviews covering veterans of World War II to Afghanistan. Former Mayor Rurak Tells Little Known Stories on Open Mike Show

Former Haverhill Mayor James A. Rurak appeared on WHAV’s Open Mike Show Monday night, discussing his life before and after his four terms in office. Rurak told little known stories about his life fixing cigarette machines for his father’s, former Sen. James. P. “Jake” Rurak’s, old vending machine business, proposing marriage to his wife Kathy at Crystal Lake and helping homeless teenagers. “There is a space between 16 and 18—18, you’re part of the system, and 16 you’re part of another system—but in the middle there are a lot of kids who at 17 have no services at all,” Rurak said. Open Mike Show Features Snow-Bound Weekend, Bill Pike Trivia

Whittier Birthplace Trustees Margaret “Peg” Toomey and Joan Cranton gave WHAV listeners Monday night an idea of what to expect during “Snow-Bound Weekend,” taking place this weekend. The trustees and organizers of the event appeared on WHAV’s Open Mike Show with host Tim Coco, also a Whittier trustee. “Snow-Bound Weekend,” a festive historical journey, takes place Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 11 and 12, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Each re-creation, taking place in front of the very hearth John Greenleaf Whittier describes in his famous poem, takes about 20 minutes. Visitors are also welcome to enjoy refreshments, hear music and review period carriages owned and restored by Shawn McCusker of Haverhill.
