‘Bookfear Before Christmas’ Takes Place Saturday at Library

The “Bookfear Before Christmas,” taking place Saturday at Haverhill Public Library, gives horror and mystery fans a chance to purchase books before Christmas and obtain signed copies from the more than 30 local authors participating. New York Times bestselling author Christopher Golden and Bram Stoker Award-nominee John M. McIlveen told WHAV’s Open Mike Show listeners Monday night there will also be readings by authors during the event, taking place Saturday, Dec. 10, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Haverhill Public Library, 99 Main St. A percentage of author sales along with proceeds from the sale of Albie D’s baked goods and raffles benefit the library.

College Funding Guru Shatters Tuition Cost Myths

Richard Joseph, founder and owner of MVP College Funding, shattered some myths about how to pay for college during a visit to WHAV’s Open Mike Show Monday night. Joseph, a longtime resident of Haverhill, said my ivy league universities may actually cost less than public colleges and universities. Red Sox Mascots Wally and Tessie to March in 52nd VFW Santa Parade

Thomas J. Sullivan, a former chairman and long-time member of the VFW Post 29 parade committee. Red Sox mascot Wally and his little sister, Tessie The Green Monster, will participate in this year’s Haverhill Santa Parade. Thomas J. Sullivan, a former chairman and longtime member of the VFW Post 29 parade committee, previewed the 52nd Annual VFW Santa Parade on Monday night’s WHAV Open Mike Show. Sullivan, a Haverhill city councilor, said this year’s parade also includes 12 marching bands, 20 to 25 floats and the Hallamore Clydesdales. “It’s the longest and largest running consecutive event in the city of Haverhill—the start of Haverhill’s holiday tradition,” Sullivan said.

Masters Gives Live Performance over WHAV’s Open Mike Show

Letriah Masters gave an impromptu live performance during 97.9 WHAV’s Open Mike Show Monday night with Tim Coco. The singer, storyteller, songwriter and more appeared on the show to discuss her upcoming free performance of acoustic music, Saturday, Nov. 12, 6:30 p.m., at Advent Christian Church, 160 Carleton St. Masters’ performance marked the first time the new WHAV FM aired live music. Masters also discussed her Haverhill-based non-profit organization, Merrimack Valley Music & Arts.

A Hundred Rubber Turkeys to Descend on City for Charity

Haverhill Kiwanis’ Rich Porcelli. One hundred rubber turkeys will descend from a helicopter circling high above Murphy’s Garrison Golf Saturday, Nov. 12, as Haverhill Kiwanis recreates a scene from a 1970s television show for charity. Rich Porcelli appeared on 97.9 WHAV’s Open Mike Show Monday night to discuss the unusual fundraiser—loosely based on “Turkeys Away,” a 1978 Thanksgiving episode of “WKRP in Cincinnati.”

Unlike the fictitious WKRP episode, Kiwanians will drop 100 rubber turkeys. If the turkey lands on a square matching a ticket holder’s number, a prize will be awarded.

Cuneo Discusses Upcoming ‘Vote for CAI’ Event Oct. 27

John Cuneo, executive director of Community Action, appeared on WHAV’s Open Mike Show last night, to discuss the agency’s upcoming “Vote for CAI” fundraiser. The event features Matt Noyes, NECN meteorologist, as master of ceremonies; and comedians Graig Murphy and Bill Campbell. “Vote for CAI” takes place Thursday, Oct. 27, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., at Haverhill Country Club, 58 Brickett Lane. Asperger Works’ Second Annual Dinner Focus of Open Mike

Plans for Asperger Works’ second annual fundraising dinner later this month were outlined during Monday night’s Open Mike Show. M. Eva Rajczyk, an Asperger Works officer and director, and Lisa S. Rajczyk, the organization’s volunteer coordinator, discussed the agency’s “Dinner of Hope” to take place Saturday, Oct. 22, beginning at 6 p.m. with registrations and cocktail hour, at Maria’s Galleria Banquet Room, 81 Essex St., Haverhill. “Our goal is to fulfill the hopes of adults with Asperger’s Syndrome to become gainfully employed in meaningful jobs through educating employers and providing job coaching to our clients,” said Eva Rajczyk.

Burke, Begley Discuss Community Support for HHS Garden

Haverhill High School paraeducator Nancy Burke and Haverhill Education Association (HEA) President Lisa R. Begley discussed the school’s garden, fall harvest and plans to submit produce for judging at Topsfield Fair during Monday night’s WHAV’s Open Mike Show. It was the first Open Mike Show to air on FM 97.9. The Haverhill High School Learning Garden began in 2012 with professional development and a grant from Massachusetts Teachers Association to support farm-to-school work. The National Education Association developed the pilot program to address student obesity rates using student engagement in school gardens and “helping students prepare healthy, nutritious dishes for themselves and each other.” HEA is affiliated with Massachusetts Teachers Association. The project provides technical assistance and resource materials to groups engaged in school garden programs through a NEA grant to the MTA.
