Meals List: Timberlane School District Begins Providing Student Breakfasts and Lunches Thursday

Timberlane School District is providing food assistance for students beginning Thursday, April 9. The district will provide bagged meals that include a three-day supply of breakfasts and lunches on Mondays, while Thursday pickup includes two days of breakfasts and lunches. There is no charge for students. Pickup times are 11:15 a.m.-noon each Monday and Thursday at Atkinson Academy, 17 Academy Ave., Atkinson, N.H., Danville Community Center, 169 Main St., Danville, N.H., TLC at Sandown Central, 295 Main St., Sandown, N.H., and at Pollard Elementary, 120 Main St., Plaistow, N.H.

Winnekenni Castle Provides Recreational Space and Hosts Cultural Events

Haverhill chemist Dr. James R Nichols built Winnekenni Castle between 1873 and 1875 after being inspired by a visit to England.  The Victorian castle, serving as a summer home for Nichols and his cousin, was sold to the City of Haverhill in 1895 becoming a favorite landmark and valuable part of the community. Today, it serves as a recreational park and venue for concerts, plays, workshops, parties and fundraisers. In 1968, the Winnekenni Foundation was founded as a nonprofit organization by Haverhill citizens with the mission to restore Winnekenni Castle which was in ruins. Today, it promotes the arts and sciences for residents of Haverhill and the Merrimack Valley.

Buttonwoods Museum Collection Illustrates Haverhill History from Colonial Days to Shoemaking

The Haverhill Historical Society’s Buttonwoods Museum features furniture, ceramics, glassware, quilts, dolls and toys, while illustrating the importance of the Merrimack River in trade, commerce and travel. Collections include Native American artifacts and shoes and shoemaking tools from Haverhill’s heyday as the Queen Slipper City. During the season, visiting hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. and Sunday, noon-5 p.m.

Haverhill Firefighting Museum Protects History of Innovation and Practices

The Haverhill Firefighting Museum protects the history of firefighting in Haverhill by preserving important innovations and moments that have led to modern firefighting practices. The history of firefighting can be traced as far back as the 2nd Century with the invention of the basic hand pump. Providing field trips, Sept. 11 memorial and an Adopt-A-Hydrant project, the museum offers opportunities to explore the importance of firefighting and its development in Haverhill and the United States for almost 400 years.

Northern Essex Grads to Forgo Pomp and Circumstance as College Cancels Formal Commencement

Caps, gowns and an inspirational speaker on the quadrangle is an experience this year’s graduates of Northern Essex Community College will forgo as officials continue to deal with the ramifications of the coronavirus. College trustees were briefed on graduation ceremony plans Wednesday, learning the May 16 scheduled commencement will be a casualty of the times. How graduation will be conducted is now up to the Student Government Association to decide. “Celebrating the hard work of our grads, especially after such a challenging semester, is very important to us,” Director of Public Relations Ernie Greenslade told WHAV. “We’re still figuring out the best way to do this and we hope to share details soon.”

According to Greenslade, two thirds of classes are already affected with this past Monday’s change to remote learning.

Soroptimist Club Providing Resources for Local Women and Girls

The Haverhill/Merrimack Soroptimist Club is among 10 Soroptimist service clubs in New England, providing resources and opportunities to women and girls for education and training through volunteering. Locally, it presents the Women’s Opportunity Award to a female head of household pursuing higher education to improve her employment opportunities and promotes “Sister Power” (formerly called “Images”), encouraging participants to become confident, educated women. Tucker Joins Holy Family Hospital as Dedicated Breast Surgeon as Women’s Health Services Expands

Dr. Catherine S. Tucker recently joined the staff of Holy Family Hospital and Steward Medical Group as a dedicated breast surgeon. Tucker is a board-certified general surgeon and fellowship trained in breast diseases. “As a fellowship-trained, dedicated breast surgeon, Dr. Tucker’s extensive experience will bring the latest and most advanced breast care to our patients, as we expand women’s health services and build a comprehensive women’s health center to serve the Merrimack Valley,” said Holy Family Hospital President Craig Jesiolowksi. Tucker has specialized in neurosurgery, general surgery and breast surgery at NYU Medical Center, Tufts New England Medical Center, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard School of Public Health, Winchester Hospital and North Shore Medical Center. Before joining Holy Family Hospital, she worked for more than 10 years at Hallmark Health Medical Associates.

Haverhill Lions Club Noted for Its Eyeglass Collections and Other Civic Works

The Haverhill Lions Club, formed in 1944, is noted for, among other things, accepting used eyeglasses that are cleaned and repaired and given to those in need. Eyeglasses may be dropped off at Haverhill Citizen Center, 10 Welcome St., or Tallman Eye Associates, Merrimack Medical Center, Suite 205, 62 Brown St., Haverhill, MA 01830

Haverhill Lions meet second and fourth Tuesdays, from September to June, at 6:30 p.m., at Maria’s Family Restaurant, 81 Essex St., Haverhill. It is a part of Lions Club International, consisting of 46,000 clubs and 1.4 million members worldwide. There’s more information at haverhilllionsclub.org.
