AHEPA Acropolis Chapter 39 Promotes Greek Ideals of Education, Civic Responsibility, Family

WHAV’s Community Spotlight is turning its microphones to those civic and charitable organizations that make Greater Haverhill a wonderful place to live. The American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association’s Acropolis Chapter 39 in Haverhill is part of the largest Greek-American association in the world. The AHEPA organization has chapters United States, Canada, Greece and Cyprus and sister chapters in Australia and New Zealand. It was established in 1922 to protect Hellenes from prejudice and to fight discrimination while promoting Greek ideals of education, civic responsibility, family and individual excellence through community service and volunteering. In Haverhill, the civic organization presents the annual Man of the Year Award, provides college scholarships, distributes Christmas baskets for the elderly and shut ins and undertakes an annual Greek American Golf Tournament for charity.

The Haverhill Kiwanis Club serves the community through service and fundraising projects. The club is a part of the global organization, Kiwanis International, consisting of volunteers who “help feed the hungry, care for the sick, shelter the homeless and educate the disenfranchised.”

Chartered in 1923, the Haverhill Kiwanis Club has grown to become a valuable resource by raising thousands of dollars through annual events and fundraisers such as its annual Golf Classic, Valentine Raffle and rubber turkey drop. UMass Lowell’s Haverhill iHub Offers Virtual Events for Entrepreneurs

UMass Lowell’s Haverhill Innovation Hub is having what it calls “a virtual event” next month on the web, entitled “How Analytics & Big Data is Influencing the World Around Us.”

Part of the university’s Emerging Technology Speaker Series, the iHub webcast focuses on how analytics and data is influencing today’s interconnected world that is driven by mobile technologies and the internet. Talking on a variety of applications such as language processing and image recognition, participants learn the capabilities of analytic technologies to become better contributors and users of data. Haverhill Breakfast Exchange Club Aims to Assist Elderly; Trivia Night May 7

WHAV’s Community Spotlight is turning its attention to those civic and charitable organizations that make Greater Haverhill a wonderful place to live. Committed to aiding, assisting and advocating for the elderly, the Breakfast Exchange Club of Greater Haverhill helps seniors meet basic needs such as providing food and a warm place to stay. The club, founded in 1997, is dedicated to making positive changes throughout the community through fundraising and awareness events. Its fourth annual Trivia Night offers an Italian dinner, cash bar, raffle baskets and cash prizes is Thursday, May 7, 5-8 p.m., at Amvet’s 147, 576 Primrose St., Haverhill. American Pickers is Coming to the Area This Summer in Search of Local Antique Collections

American Pickers’ Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz are coming to New England this summer and looking for local and unique collections with interesting stories to showcase. The documentary series examines the world of antique “picking” and follows two of the most skilled pickers, Wolfe and Fritz, as they hunt for America’s most valuable antiques while learning the stories behind them. Planning on filming episodes of the show during July, they are looking for potential contenders to film with and showcase, giving local collections a chance to feature the history of Haverhill and the surrounding area. Haverhill High, St. James, Haverhill Trade Classes of 1966 Seek Vietnam Veterans Memorial Donations

The Haverhill High, St. James and Haverhill Trade School classes of 1966 are collecting donations to support the new Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Mill Brook Park and say a donor will match contributions received. Classmates say they want to honor their members who served, including Frederick Durocher who died in Vietnam in 1968. “Many of our classmates are Vietnam veterans…We are asking the Classes of 1966 to properly recognize their service. Thanks to the generosity of a classmate who served in Vietnam, all donations will be matched,” a statement said.

Update: The Greater Haverhill Chamber of Commerce has resumed the gift card program. The story below has been updated to reflect a new $25 match limit per customer. The Greater Haverhill Chamber of Commerce is resuming its successful dollar-for-dollar gift card program after temporarily closing it until more donations arrived. Rotary Club of Haverhill Helping to Build Community Institutions Since 1915

Raising money for local charities, the Rotary Club of Haverhill helps build community institutions. Since 1915, the club has helped youth, elderly and others who are less fortunate to exhibit “Service Above Self” and exercise fellowship. One of its signature events is the annual Veterans Day Awards Breakfast. Proceeds go to support veterans’ causes in Greater Haverhill.
