Haverhill and Massachusetts State Police are reportedly investigating after an Amesbury man’s body was discovered Tuesday night at Winnekenni Park.

Witnesses said the body was found around 7 p.m. Sources told WHAV the as-yet unidentified man drove to Winnekenni Castle alone Sunday night, where he abandoned his compact sport utility vehicle in front of the caretaker’s residence and walked into the woods. Crime scene tape was placed around the blue or dark gray Toyota RAV 4 and a State Police K-9 was brought to the castle early Tuesday night.

Unconfirmed reports suggest police have been searching the vast park area since Sunday night.

The state medical examiner arrived about 8:45 p.m. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner “investigates the cause and manner of death for deaths that occur under violent, suspicious, or unexplained circumstances.”

“Foul play is not suspected,” said Carrie Kimball-Monahan, spokesperson for Essex County District Attorney Jonathan W. Blodgett’s office.
