Indie Retailer Bull Moose to Open Store in Plaistow Next Month, Plans to Host Local Poets, Musicians

Indie Media Retailer Bull Moose will open a store in Plaistow, N.H., in June, with the new location likely hosting performances by local musicians and poetry readings. With staff moving 10 miles from a Salem, N.H., shop closing May 18, President Shawn Nichols told WHAV, employees “collectively selected” the 34 Plaistow Road location, according to a press release. The retailer mostly carries records, CDs—including on consignment from local artists—books and games. During the pandemic, Nichols told WHAV they stopped hosting performances by local artists, but have started to get back into public events recently. “The thought around the space in Plaistow will be that it could be used for someone with an acoustic guitar, or a table for role playing games, or for a poetry recital.”

He added, “[In] the last year or so, we’ve started to really get back into it, but it’s rebuilding that old muscle memory.

Haverhill Gardeners Prepare for Season At Annual Plant Sale

It’s a gardener’s dream: shopping for lovingly hand-raised plants, access to soil testing, and a pre-season tune-up for garden tools, all provided at the Haverhill Garden Club’s Annual Plant Sale. The club’s lone fundraiser for the year, the sale supports the organization’s scholarships and public planting projects. Shoppers will find a wide variety of annuals, perennials, herbs and small shrubs, until they are sold out. A master gardener will be on hand to test a sample of gardeners’ soil, and club volunteers will clean and sharpen tools for maximum performance in local gardens. The popular event is a favorite of area gardeners, and items normally sell out quickly.

District Reassigns J.G. Whittier Principal Condon; Union Calls Move ‘Good First Step’

Following accusations of creating a “hostile” work environment and failing to address safety concerns, John Greenleaf Whittier School Principal Matthew Condon has been moved to an unspecified position at Haverhill High School. Effective Monday, May 13, Supervisor of Science and Technology Kevin Higginbottom will become interim principal until the end of the school year, Haverhill Public Schools Superintendent Margaret Marotta told School Committee members last night. “Myself and the central office staff will continue to have a daily presence at the school as we make further decisions about the bridge to change at J.G. [Whittier],” she said. “We believe that this collaborative approach will allow us to effectively address the challenges we face while maintaining a focus on the success and well-being of our students.”

First hearing of the decision at the meeting, Haverhill Education Association President Barry Davis told WHAV he believes union members support Higginbottom, calling the replacement a “good first step.”

“We’re glad with the work he does as a curriculum director and I believe he will do some good work, so we’re hopeful,” he said. “It’s 22 days, so we’ll see what happens.”

He added, “We wish that this problem was addressed earlier in the year, when it was first brought up, but we are glad something is finally being done.”

According to the union, staff initially reached out to Marotta after a fall 2023 union survey, which WHAV could not verify, revealing most members thought their principals communicated poorly.

An SUV allegedly driving the wrong direction at a high speed collided head on with a Merrimack Valley Transit—or MeVa—bus late Wednesday afternoon on Route 110 near the Boston North Technology Park. MeVa Administrator Noah Berger told WHAV the driver of the SUV was taken to Portsmouth Hospital in “fairly rough shape.” Everyone on the bus was able to walk off without assistance, he added, with three going to the hospital as a precautionary measure. Reviewing video footage of the incident, Berger said the car burst into flames on impact. He praised the bus driver’s quick thinking and professionalism. “The driver maneuvered the bus so it was not going to be affected by the flames.
