While city officials await the secretary of the state’s decision on whether a Haverhill Police investigation should be made public, officials clarified Thursday why WHAV’s October request was denied. The radio station’s Oct. 29 request for a “report” of police’s investigation of the Department of Public Works was premature, according to the city’s legal counsel. Lawyers said the report was incomplete on the day WHAV made its request under the state’s public records law.

Haverhill is among the Massachusetts communities experiencing lingering problems with the 911 alert system, leading the department to proactively release alternate ways to report an emergency on Friday afternoon. Callers who receive a busy signal or automated message that all circuits are busy are asked to dial 978-556-0204 in the City of Haverhill only. This number is only for when 911 is not operational, police said.
Fifteen percent of working parents in Massachusetts and 19 percent of children in the state will be affected by the $1 minimum wage increase that takes effect next week, according to a new analysis. The Jan. 1, 2019 hike from $11 hourly to $12, part of a multi-year phased-in increase to $15 an hour, will benefit 662,000 workers, for a total wage increase of $817.5 million, according to the Massachusetts Budget and Policy Center. As reported by State House News Service, the boost in the wage floor is part of a law Gov. Charlie Baker signed earlier this year that also created a paid family and medical leave program in Massachusetts and instituted an annual sales tax holiday. The law represented a deal struck with advocates to avoid a series of ballot fights.

This might just warrant a few extra boxes of Thin Mints delivered to the police station! Fourth and fifth grade Girl Scouts from Haverhill Troop 62806 received their very own detective badges thanks to a lesson in police work from Detective Rick Welch, the department confirmed. During his visit, Welch offered a tutorial on fingerprinting, handwriting analysis and taught the troop—who meets at All Saints Parish—about DNA evidence.
