UPDATE: Given the upcoming weather forecast, Emmaus tells WHAV the following:

“Despite the weather forecast, Emmaus’ 6th Annual MLK Day of Service is still scheduled to take place. We invite all who need a warm place to go to come and enjoy a day of multicultural performances, a community resource fair and a hot breakfast and lunch. All Monday volunteers are asked to report as scheduled. For those who are slated to volunteer on Sunday, Jan. 20: We are watching the weather forecast closely.  If we need to change the 1 p.m. volunteer reporting time, we will make that announcement on our Facebook page by 11 a.m. We will also have updates on our event line at 978-241-3438 and on Facebook as needed. All volunteers are also encouraged to check their emails throughout the storm as well.”

ORIGINAL STORY:

Monday’s Martin Luther King Jr. holiday is a day of service for Haverhill’s Emmaus, with members of the nonprofit planning a community resource fair, live performances and meals for neighbors.

From 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Jan. 21 at White Street’s Trinity Episcopal Church, the program “MLK’s Legacy: Unity Through Performance Arts” marks the sixth year Emmaus has gathered local community groups for the outreach day. Taking part this year are the Haverhill Police Department, Lions Club vision van, the Haverhill YMCA and Community Action, among other agencies.

The first 150 households that register for the event receive a free Winter Wellness goodie bag that includes a first-aid kit and other personal care items, organizer Margot Regan told WHAV. Advance registration is encouraged by visiting the Emmaus website at EmmausInc.org and searching “MLK 2019.” Same-day signups are also welcome.

Volunteers are needed to compile goodie bags, set up for the event on Sunday afternoon and help serve breakfast and lunch on Monday. To donate your time, call Denise at 978-377-0639.
