A call from a concerned motorist during Wednesday night’s rush hour commute triggered an investigation into a reported shooting on the Haverhill stretch of Interstate 495, State Police tell WHAV.

Shortly before 7 p.m., a caller reported that a car going southbound on 495 near Route 213 “appeared to shoot into another moving vehicle,” police said.

No gunfire-related injuries were reported, but troopers later located a vehicle with possible damage from a projectile in the parking lot of a Lawrence Wendy’s restaurant. State Police spokesman David Procopio told WHAV the occupants of the damaged vehicle were not cooperative with police.

State Police returned to Haverhill around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday when Haverhill Police located the other vehicle involved in the alleged shooting. According to Procopio, that vehicle was parked in the lot of a city apartment complex. A State Police K-9 unit combed the area but did not locate the owner of the vehicle.

The investigation into the alleged shooting is ongoing.
