Children participating in Northern Essex Community College’s Summer STEM program benefited from a $20,000 donation by National Grid to expand the Haverhill-based College for Kids effort.

The donation was presented to Northern Essex President Lane Glenn by National Grid Customer Energy Integration Director Kevin Kelly earlier this month. The money is earmarked to hire a program coordinator and purchase supplies for the science, engineering, technology, and math program for students in grades kindergarten through 12.

“This funding was critical to the program’s growth,” Northern Essex’s Marcy Yeager said. “It allowed us to expand the program. It allowed us to free up other grant funds to increase the number of scholarships awarded thus increasing the total K-12 student population served.”

This summer marked the 20th year for the College for Kids program. In addition to the STEM offerings, children ages 7-13 took part in art, music and physical education summer sessions at the Haverhill campus.
