Haverhill Unemployment Rate Holds Steady; City Seen as Growth Area

Haverhill’s unemployment rate is holding at 3.4 percent, close to the state average of 3.3 percent, according to figures released Tuesday by the state’s Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development.

In real numbers, the November figures mean about 1,100 Haverhill residents seeking jobs could not find them. Altogether, 33,104 Haverhill residents are employed. In the last year, the Haverhill-Newburyport-Amesbury area was one of eight growth areas in the state.

“Local unemployment rates decreased in four labor market areas, increased in nine areas and remained the same in 11 labor market areas in the state during the month of November,” the labor department reported.

Methuen’s jobless rate stands at 3.6 percent with 966 of nearly 27,000 people unable to find work. Andover’s unemployment rate is one of the lowest in the region at 2.8 percent. There, only 507 out of 18,000 people are looking for jobs.
