Democratic State Representative Candidates Debate Monday in Live Forum

The Democratic candidates for state representative are expected to participate in a live debate next Monday night.

Paul A. Magliocchetti and Andy Vargas, primary candidates for the Third Essex state representative seat recently vacated by former Rep. Brian Dempsey, debate Monday, Sept. 25, 7 p.m., at the Haverhill Community Television’s Harbor Place Studio, 2 Merrimack St. The debate is co-sponsored by HC Media/Haverhill Community Television, WHAV and the Haverhill Democratic City Committee.

WHAV will broadcast the debate live over 97.9 WHAV FM.

A panel of four, Tim Coco of WHAV, Frank Novak of HC Media, and Joe LeBlanc and Linda Lankowski of the City Committee will ask questions for the first part of the program and will then ask questions from the public and the audience for the second part of the program.  Anyone who wants to submit a question for the candidates ahead of the debate can go to and complete the form on the HDCC homepage.

The event is open to the public, but seating is limited on a first come, first serve basis. A reception with the candidates follows the debate.

“This is a great opportunity for the state representative candidates to speak to the voters of the Third Essex District and answer their questions just two weeks before this crucial election.” said Haverhill Democratic City Committee Chair William D. Cox Jr. The Democratic Primary election is Tuesday, Oct. 10, and the general election takes place in conjunction with Haverhill’s municipal election Nov. 7.

  1. I don’t believe that both Dems are supporting a sanctuary city proposal. I am certain that Mr. Vargas is and that Mr Magliocchetti isn’t. I Can support Mr. Magliocchetti but never ever Mr. un American Vargas

    • As the poster below correctly pointed out, The Haverhill Democratic City Committee do support illegals, and it’s spelled out on their web page. If either candidate truly believed as you state, then they could either boycott and refuse their support.

  2. and are two websites which provide incredible historical data. I’ve traced my family history on these sites back to the 1800’s. In researching the 2010 US Census, when Andy Vargas would have been 15 or 16 years old and attending HHS, there is absolutely no record of his family living in the city. It is very well known at this point that Andy’s father, Andreas Orlando Vargas, broke the laws of this country came to Massachusetts as an illegal trespasser from the Dominican Republic. Common practice for people illegally in this country is to intentionally not fill out the US Census for fear that their immigration status be revealed and documented.

Andy should be asked directly why his family doesn’t appear in the Census.

Have to scrub the questions so no one looks bad if they are asked any real questions.

    • I visited the site – what caught my attention was that Haverhill has an immigration task force that is looking into an app to warn when ICE is coming – click on immigration on the HDCC homepage.
