Edwin Davis, 87, of North Yarmouth, Maine, and formerly of Haverhill, died Monday, Oct. 31. He was born Dec. 28, 1928, in Haverhill, to George Gilman and Doris (Murray) Davis.
Davis attended Tilton School and graduated from Haverhill High School. He first attended Yankton College in Yankton, S.D.. He was drafted into the army during the time of the Korean War but spent much of that time in Germany. Upon discharge from the army he graduated from New England College with a business degree. He began what would be a long career with W. T. Grant in the early 1950s and was with them until bankruptcy closed the stores in 1976. He married Carol Merrick of Haverhill, Sept. 4, 1955. Through the years with Grants they lived in Great Barrington, Westfield, Fitchburg, Medford, Watertown, Westwood and Beverly Farms. They then were transferred to Maine where they lived first in Springvale and then Yarmouth. He had several jobs following Grant’s bankruptcy and ultimately they moved to Atkinson, N.H. for a job offer and to be closer to their aging parents in Haverhill. They returned to Maine in 2002, this time to North Yarmouth.
Davis found his true calling in his later years doing property maintenance. All his life he had taken meticulous care of his lawn and his house and he put this experience to use maintaining other people’s property. In his earlier years, when he was with Grants, he participated in both Rotary and Kiwanis. He consistently served as a trustee for whatever church they were attending. He was also a lifelong member of the Masons.
Edwin is survived by his wife of 61 years, Carol; daughter Cheryl (Peter) Colesworthy of North Yarmouth, Maine; son Glenn (Guri) Davis of North Falmouth; seven grandchildren, Samantha Perkins, Vanessa Winters, Graham Davis and Peter, Annie, Emily and Sam Colesworthy; as well as two great grandchildren.
