Mark E. Whelan, 42, Haverhill School Custodian

Mark_WhelanMark E. Whelan, 42, of Haverhill, passed away Sunday, Sept. 6, at Mass General Hospital, Boston.

He was born Jan. 11, 1973, in Woburn, the son of Edward F. Jr. and Florence (Corleto) Whelan. He was raised and educated in Winchester and graduated from Winchester High School, class of 1991. He attended Milford Academy in Connecticut and Salve Regina, Rhode Island.

Whelan worked as a route driver for Poland Springs, Dracut, and most recently, was employed as a custodian for the Haverhill Public School Department. He was an avid sports fan who loved the Boston Red Sox. He was also a devoted Notre Dame Football fan, who bled “blue & gold.” He was a loving and dedicated father who volunteered his time to coach his kid’s sports teams, and never missed a game.

Whelan is survived by his wife of 15 years, and his best friend, Jill M. (Taylor) Whelan of Haverhill;  daughter Riley E. Whelan; son, Brendan A. Whelan; father, Edward F. Whelan Jr. and wife, Diana, of Margate, Fla.; sisters Dawn Peloso and husband, John, of Clinton, and Debbie Whelan-Baglio and husband, Michael of Billerica; father and mother-in-law, Alan Taylor and wife, Janice, of Haverhill; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles. He was pre-deceased by his mother, Florence E. Whelan.

Family and friends are invited to attend his life celebration Thursday, Sept. 10, from 4 to 8 p.m., at Berube-Comeau Funeral Home, 47 Broadway, Haverhill, MA 01832. His funeral begins Friday, Sept. 11, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at All Saints Parish, 120 Bellevue Ave., Haverhill.
