Robert J. ‘Bob’ Sweeney, 96, World War II Veteran

Robert J. “Bob” Sweeney, 96, of Haverhill, passed away Wednesday, April 15, at Holy Family Hospital in Haverhill.

Sweeney was born Jan. 5, 1919 in Haverhill, son of the late Daniel H. and Marion C. (Brindle) Sweeney. He was raised in Haverhill and graduated from St. James High School. He had attended Merrimack College and served his country during World War II in the European Theater as a master sergeant and was honorably discharged.

While on a brief leave during World War II, Sweeney asked for his wife’s hand in marriage and two days later they were married. Following a one-day honeymoon, he returned back to the European war effort. His and Angeline’s love was everlasting—70 plus years. Sweeney loved dining and dancing and a good party. He was an avid Patriots fan. Everything for Bob was about his family and his community. During his life, he was active in the local Democratic Party, the Boy Scouts of America, the Men of Merrimac, St. Vincent de Paul Society and various other organizations. He worked as a senior manager for more than 40 years at Western Electric, North Andover.

Sweeney is survived by his spouse of 71 years, Angeline M. (DeRoche) Sweeney of Haverhill; his daughters Carol A. Sweeney of Lawrence, and Gayle M. Chatlosh and husband, Brian of Concord,; his sons; Daniel H. Sweeney of Annisquam , Steven M. Sweeney of Greenwich, Conn., and Dennis J. Sweeney and wife, Deborah of Salem, N.H.; his grandchildren Daniel J. Sweeney and wife, Lisa, Sean M. Sweeney and wife, Heather, Kris R. Chatlosh and friend, Morgan Hardy and Kelsey M. Chatlosh; great-grandchildren Ryder and Ethan Sweeney; and numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins.. He was predeceased by his sister and two brothers

Family and friends are invited to attend Sweeney’s life celebration Saturday, April 18, from 10 a.m. to noon at Berube-Comeau Funeral Home, 47 Broadway, Haverhill. A Mass of christian burial follows at 12:30 p.m. at All Saints Church in Haverhill. Burial will take place at a later date.
