Bert D. Kokas, 87, WWII Veteran, Cedardale Staff

Bert D. Kokas, 87, a longtime Haverhill resident died Saturday morning, Oct. 18, at his residence in Peabody.

He was born in Lorain, Ohio, Sept. 8, 1927, son of the late Bertralan and Margaret (Krajec) Kokas and was educated there. During World War II he served with the United Sates Navy attaining the rank of PHM3. After being discharged he was a self employed carpenter. Kokas also worked for more than 10 years for Channell Builders. More recently he was employed as part of the facility staff at Cedardale Health and Fitness Club, Ward Hill, for more than 20 years. An avid tennis player, he also enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending an occasional afternoon at Rockingham Park.

His survivors include his wife of 67 years, Anne M. “Peg” (Campbell) Kokas of Peabody, a son, Dan and his wife Hope Kokas of Holderness, N.H., a daughter Karen Haley of Maine, two sisters, Dorothy Farschman, Donna Baumert both of Ohio, a granddaughter, Laura and her husband Michael DeVelis and their children, Ava and Maya of Woburn, two step grandchildren, Kristin and Katherine Dietz as well as several nieces and nephews. Kokas was the father of the late Pam Dallon who died in 1998 and brother of the late Lillian Kokas and Marie Crook. In lieu of flowers contributions in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Calling hours will be Wednesday, Oct. 22, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Home, 106 Summer St., Haverhill. Services will be held Thursday, Oct. 23, at 11:00 at the H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Home, 106 Summer St., Haverhill. Burial with military honors will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Haverhill.
