Sat. ‘Straw Poll’ Gives Advantage to Incumbent State Sen., Rep.

If the Haverhill Democratic City Committee’s “Straw Poll” Saturday represents Haverhill sentiment, local incumbents will sail to victory Tuesday.

According to the poll, State Senator Katie O’Connor Ives leads challenger Jessica Finocchiaro by a margin of 71 to 27 percent and State Rep. Diana DiZoglio polled 66 percent compared to challengers Oscar Camargo, 19 percent, and Phil DeCologero, 15 percent. The polls, however, represent only the views of Democratic Party insiders and the numbers of supporters they bring with them.

A similar poll two years ago showed former Methuen Mayor William Manzi winning the state senate race against Ives and Tim Coco. Coco, in fact, took every Haverhill precinct in the race, while Ives won the Democratic nomination with 38 percent of the vote.

Poll results in other races include:

  • Steve Grossman, 64%
  • Martha Coakley, 25%
  • Don Berwick, 11%

Lt. Governor

  • Mike Lake, 51%
  • Steve Kerrigan, 28%
  • Leland Cheung, 21%

  • Warren Tolman, 57%
  • Maura Healey, 43%
