Emmaus to Dedicate Urban Park in Sept. 11 Ceremony

Emmaus, which operates services and shelters for the homeless, will have a Day of Service and Remembrance, Thursday, on the 13th anniversary of the 9/11 attack on the United States. The group will also dedicate Haverhill’s newest park, “Emmaus Commons.”

The event, beginning at 8:30 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 11, at the corner of Locust and Orchard Streets, serves as the city of Haverhill’s official September 11 ceremony.

“This event will honor those who lost their lives, and those who saved lives, 13 years ago with the dedication of a new bench in the park,” according an Emmaus press release.

Officials said Emmaus undertook a community project during the spring of 2012 “to transform the dilapidated, vacant parcel of land…into a vibrant urban pocket park. Over the past two years, Emmaus, working in concert with multiple community partners and volunteers, has created a passive recreational space in the center of a densely-populated urban area.”

Organized by Emmaus’ AmeriCorps/VISTA team, the ceremony is made possible through a grant from the Massachusetts Service Alliance. The Haverhill Mayor’s Office and police and fire departments, Bugles Across America and YouthBuild Lawrence will be participating in the event.

Refreshments at Butch’s Uptown following the ceremony.
