Several hundred supporters turned out at a rally Tuesday calling for the reinstatement of ousted Market Basket President Arthur T. Demoulas.
A gathering of employees and others organized by a group known as “We Are Market Basket” was held at a store in Chelsea. Media reports also say similar rallies were held at other store locations in Massachusetts.
The board of directors of Demoulas Super Markets, Inc., owner and operator of the local-based supermarket chain, voted this week to remove company President Arthur T. Demoulas and two other executives. Supporters contend the board is putting profits first and that Arthur T. Demoulas helped expand the chain and became popular with customers and employees alike.
The action by the company’s board is the latest in a decades-long dispute between two factions of the Demoulas family over control of the Market Basket empire.
