Police: Three Charged in Suspected Gang-Related Shooting

Editor’s note: This story contains updated information. Police have arrested a total of three suspects in a case of suspected gang-related retaliation for the shooting last month at Swasey Field. Juan Marte, 18, and Mario Acosta, 20, both of Haverhill, are scheduled for arraignment in Haverhill District Court. Police did not provide addresses for either man. Arrested Wednesday at 6:30 a.m., Marte was charged with armed assault with intent to murder, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building and unlawful possession of a firearm.

As Latest Shooting is Investigated, Earlier Suspect Indicted

As police work to get a handle on the latest gunfire incident in Haverhill’s Mount Washington neighborhood, an Essex County grand jury has indicted a 16-year-old “youthful offender” in connection with the shootings of two men last month at Swasey Field. Martin Lewis, 16, was indicted on two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon that led to two men receiving non-life threatening gunshot wounds Saturday, May 14, near Swasey Field on Blaisdell Street. Lewis, who remains held without bail, now faces the possibility of an adult state prison sentence, according to Carrie Kimball-Monahan, spokesperson for Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett. Lewis will still be tried in Lawrence Juvenile Court.

Temple Street Gunfire Seen Connected to Swasey Shootings

Haverhill Police Chief Alan R. DeNaro, Mayor James J. Fiorentini and Recreation Director Vincent Ouellette particpated in a press conference last month after two men were reported shot. Gunfire erupted in the Mount Washington neighborhood late Thursday afternoon in what police suspect may be gang-related retaliation linked to last month’s Swasey Field shooting. No injuries were reported following the 5:25 p.m. reports of shots fired near 72 Temple St. WHAV was alerted to the report of gunfire by a passerby. “There is an active crime scene in that area,” confirmed Captain Robert A. Pistone, police spokesman.

Judge Orders Alleged 16-Year-Old Shooter Held Without Bail

The shooting took place Saturday afternoon at Swasey Field. A 16-year-old male juvenile, accused of shooting and wounding two rival gang members, including another juvenile, in Haverhill Saturday near Swasey Field, was ordered held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing Friday in Lawrence Juvenile Court. Juvenile Court Justice Jose Sanchez Tuesday afternoon also granted a motion from prosecutors to revoke the teen suspect’s bail on a pending case charging him with possession of a class D drug with intent to distribute, according to Carrie Kimball-Monahan, spokesperson for Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett. The teen was arrested Monday evening at Temple and Reed Streets in Haverhill, shortly after a news conference held by police and Mayor James J. Fiorentini.  Police said the juvenile was charged with two counts of assault to murder while armed, one count of carrying a firearm without a license, one count of carrying ammunition without a FID card, and two counts of discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling. He was also arrested on a warrant out of Essex Juvenile Court for failing to show up in court on the pending drug case.

UPDATE: Police Arrest 16-Year-Old in Swasey Shooting

A press conference took place on the very spot of Saturday’s shooting. Among those present Monday were Haverhill Police Chief Alan R. DeNaro, Mayor James J. Fiorentini and Recreation Director Vincent Ouellette. Shortly after Haverhill police said they have video of the man who shot two rival gang members Saturday afternoon at Swasey Field, they arrested a 16-year-old male for the crime. Police said the juvenile was charged with two counts of assault to murder while armed, one count of carrying a firearm without a license, one count of carrying ammunition without a FID card, and two counts of discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling. He was also arrested on a warrant out of Essex Juvenile Court for failing to show up in court on a charge of possession of Class D drug with intent to distribute.

Swasey Field Shooting Injuries Not Life Threatening

The park was renovated over the last two years. Haverhill Mayor James J. Fiorentini said Sunday he is “outraged” by a shooting incident at about 4 p.m., Saturday, which wounded two people and reportedly disrupted a little league baseball game, near Swasey Field on Blaisdell Street. Two young men, including a juvenile, were taken to Holy Family Hospital at Merrimack Valley, Haverhill, after a response by Haverhill police. One of the victims was later transported to a Boston hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injury, according to Carrie Kimball-Monahan, spokesperson for Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett. Neither their identities nor descriptions of any suspect or suspects are being released now.
