Police Arrest Murder Suspect; Identify Haverhill Victim

A 34-year-old Haverhill man is in custody, charged with shooting to death another man on Portland Street late yesterday afternoon.

Sean LaRose was arrested in Amesbury by Massachusetts State Police and charged with murdering Joseph Smith, 34, after a shooting just before 4:45 p.m., Thursday, at 25 Portland St. Essex County District Attorney Jonathan W. Blodgett’s office said LaRose escaped from the area in a stolen car just as Haverhill police arrived.

“They found the victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene,” said Carrie Kimball-Monahan, the district attorney’s spokeswoman.

LaRose is scheduled to be arraigned on charges of murder and theft of a motor vehicle this morning in Haverhill District Court.

As WHAV was the first to report, State Police were told to watch for a red Mazda CX-9. Massachusetts State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section, K-9 and Special Tactical Operations located and arrested LaRose in Amesbury.
