Schools’ Receipt of $3.2 Million Grant Offers Public Training Opportunities

The School Committee took time Thursday to cheer the receipt of a $3.2 million state grant that also offers communitywide benefits. As WHAV reported first last week, the Career and Technical Education Annex Pilot Program will create 140 new vocational seats for Haverhill High School students. Haverhill Public Schools Supervisor of Career and Technical Education Victoria Kelley told the Committee the school system “took a leap of faith this year” and accepted all its lottery students this year using shared classroom space. The grant, however, pays for construction of dedicated classrooms and labs, accommodating current growth and allowing an additional 80 student seats. The grant pays for a dedicated Healthcare Simulation Lab to expand the school’s Health Assisting program and Advanced Technology Lab for the Information Support Services and Networking program.

City Mourns Passing of Haverhill Police Capt. Fogarty After Battling Cancer

The public will pay its respects later this week to 27-year Haverhill police veteran Andrea D. Fogarty, who died Thursday after a long battle with cancer. Fogarty, who was 52 and rose through the ranks to become captain and was named three times as officer of the year, served a majority of her career as a detective and also worked in community policing and multiple NEMLEC units. The Haverhill Police Department reported her passing Friday morning. “Throughout a long and dedicated career, she was known for unwavering professionalism, strong leadership and a genuine commitment to the men and women of this department and the community we serve,” the department said. “Even during her illness, Capt. Fogarty remained positive, resilient and deeply appreciative of the support shown to her, reflecting the strength of character that defined her both personally and professionally.”

Fogarty graduated from Haverhill High School in 1992 and went on to earn bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Criminal Justice and Administration from Western New England University.

Pedestrian Dies Friday Morning in Downtown Haverhill Crash

A male pedestrian died this morning after being struck in downtown Haverhill by a sport utility vehicle. Essex County District Attorney Paul F. Tucker’s office, which has the responsibility of releasing information involving fatalities, confirmed the as-yet unidentified male was struck Friday, around 9 a.m., near 6 Washington St., close to Washington Square. Tucker’s office said a 2021 Ford Bronco Sport collided with the male, whose age or place of residence was also not released. Haverhill Fire and police provided initial aid. The male was taken to Merrimack Health Lawrence Hospital, where he was declared dead.

Haverhill Rotary to Honor Fossarelli, Breton, Morissette at Veterans Lunch

Two decorated Vietnam veterans and a third who served during the time the Berlin Wall was falling will be honored next month at the Rotary of Club of Haverhill’s Veterans Service Award lunch. U.S. Army Vietnam-era veterans Louis T. Fossarelli, who went on to serve as a Haverhill police officer, entrepreneur and city councilor, and Richard A. Breton, who advocates for veteran services at home, and U.S. Army veteran Dove A. Morissette, who volunteers for a variety of causes, are set to be honored Thursday, Nov. 12, starting at noon, at Haverhill Country Club, 58 Brickett Lane, Haverhill. Rotary’s Veterans Service Awards are given to individuals who have honorably served in any branch of the military and continued to serve the community through volunteer activities, public service or any other worthwhile engagements, making a positive contribution to the community. Fossarelli, who served in military police and combat infantry unit from May 1965 to February 1968, received numerous awards for his service, including Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, two Army Commendation Medals and Combat Infantryman Badge.

Haverhill’s MacIntosh to Attend World Series and Play in MLB Pitch, Hit & Run

Haverhill native Mollie MacIntosh is competing in Major League Baseball’s pitch, hit and run national championship and going to the World Series. After finishing at number one overall in North America, MacIntosh is heading to game two of the World Series, between the Milwaukee Brewers and Tampa Bay Rays this Saturday. MacIntosh and other competitors will be recognized on the field before the game. Sunday, she’ll head to the MLB Pitch, Hit & Run national championship at the Brewers home turf, American Family Field. MacIntosh will go into the championship as the top seed after finishing number one overall in North America during the regional championships at Fenway Park. In an interview with WHAV two years ago, she explained how she had to compete.

State Awards Haverhill High School $50K to Continue Innovation Career Pathways

Haverhill High School was awarded $50,000 Thursday to continue its Innovation Career Pathways programs that provide students with hands-on learning experiences and opportunities to explore careers in high-demand STEM fields and other growing industries. Last May, Haverhill High School’s Graphic Design and Visual Communications program was designated an Innovation Career Pathway by the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. The sum was among $4.7 million statewide in implementation and continuation grants to help schools sustain and strengthen existing programs this school year. This school year, more than 8,500 students are enrolled in 303 Innovation Career Pathways at 130 high schools, representing nearly 36% of eligible high schools across Massachusetts. Through these programs, students explore careers, take advanced coursework and gain real-world experience through internships and work-based learning.

Area Police Stations to Accept Unused, Expired Drugs Saturday

Saturday is DEA National Prescription Take Back Day at Haverhill, Methuen, Plaistow and Atkinson. N.H., and other area police stations. Police stations are accepting expired prescription medications Saturday, Oct. 24, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The service is free and anonymous. Other participating departments in the area are Lawrence, Merrimac, North Andover and West Newbury.
