Odd Fest Oddities Fair at Winnekenni Takes Place Sunday, Sept. 8

Winnekenni gets weird Sunday, Sept. 8 with an oddities market taking over the space. The event, hosted by the antique and oddity shop Evens and Oddities on 42 Emerson St. in Haverhill, brings together 25 vendors and their off-beat wares, including creative taxidermy, skulls and assorted bones, artwork, jewelry and other oddities. Admission is $1 and the event takes place from noon-4 p.m.

Members of the city’s Vietnam Veterans Memorial Ad Hoc Commission are gathering at Washington Street’s Garibaldi Club on Wednesday for a “Tour of Italy” dinner fundraiser to raise funds for the ongoing improvements to the Vietnam Memorial at Mill Brook Park. With tickets nearly sold out, Commission Chairman Ralph Basiliere and Commissioner Linda Baxter tell WHAV the event is shaping up well. “We’re going to have a fun night and we’re going to see exactly where we’re at as a Commission,” Basiliere said during an interview Wednesday on WHAV’s “Win for Breakfast.”

During the 6 p.m.event, the group plans to update locals on the progress of the memorial on Mill Street set to honor the city’s 13 war dead.

Overnight I-495 Lane Closures Taking Place Aug. 19-22

Another week, another round of lane closures, Haverhill. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation has posted next week’s Interstate 495 lane closures for the north and southbound highway spans and they’re starting even earlier than usual to accommodate construction of the Haverhill bridge over the Merrimack River. Starting Monday, Aug. 19 through Thursday, Aug. 22, the two left lanes on both north and southbound sides close overnight from 7 p.m.-5 a.m. each night.

Crafting and Card Making at Haverhill Public Library Aug. 19

A class for beginners and experienced crafters takes place Monday, Aug. 19 at the Haverhill Public Library, 99 Main St., at 6 p.m., where patrons can create cards, bookmarks or 3-D items.

Former Hillie Feran Joins Haverhill High Athletics Staff as Girls’ Varsity Swim Coach

A former Hillie comes home. After 30 years and more than 325 career wins leading the brown and gold girls’ varsity swim team, Coach Rick Battistini is passing the torch to his former swim athlete Meghan Feran as she assumes the top coaching position in his stead. Director of Athletics Tom O’Brien made the announcement late last month, bringing Feran on board three years after she coached athletes during the Olympic Trials. The owner of SOLO Aquatics, Feran swam competitively at Springfield College, where she was a four-time NEWMAC All-Academic selection, O’Brien said. During her time at Haverhill High, she swam four years, was captain of the team and named to the MVC All-Conference Team her senior year.

Jaffarian Volvo Toyota Donates $5K to Lawrence Boys and Girls Club

Game on—in style! The Jaffarian Volvo Toyota “Youth in Motion” fund has made a donation of $5,000 to the Lawrence Boys and Girls Club for the purchase of sneakers and other sports program equipment, the River Street dealership headed by Gary Jaffarian tells WHAV. The donation provides vital equipment for the Club, according to Executive Director Manny Ayala. “This fund enables our teens to receive sneakers to play basketball, our young people go to camp, among other important purchases that allow our kids to thrive in the sports and activities that they love.”

One participant in the program, a 15-year-old named John, shared that he was grateful for his new sneakers, “that help me improve my basketball skills — they have a great grip which allows me to move confidently on the court.”

Other sports equipment provided through the program includes prescription swim and basketball goggles, football, track and cheerleading equipment, Jaffarian said.

Two new firefighters are set to clock in at the Methuen Fire Department after graduating from the 50-day career recruit firefighting training program of the Massachusetts State Firefighting Academy, State Fire Marshal Peter J. Ostrosky’s office tells WHAV. Brian Wolfendale and Wayne Borden were two members of the class of 37 that represent 23 fire departments across the state. The program concluded this past Friday, Aug. 9 with a ceremony at the Department of Fire Services in Stow.

Tom Bergeron Relives His WHAV Days During Surprise Station Appearance
