West Newbury Fire Department, with the assistance of mutual aid partners, extinguished a two-alarm fire in a single-family home Thursday afternoon on Main Street.

Fire Chief Michael Dwyer said West Newbury Public Safety Dispatch received a 911 call at about 1:57 p.m., reporting a house fire at 598 Main St.

Upon arrival, West Newbury Police reported heavy smoke showing from the rear of the building. First-arriving firefighters from Newburyport began aggressively attacking the fire. A second alarm was transmitted to bring additional resources to the scene.

“Thanks to the quick response of our firefighters and mutual aid partners, we were able to contain the fire and limit the damage, potentially saving the structure,” said Dwyer.

Seven people were displaced as a result of the fire, but no injuries were reported. Crews helped safely remove pets from the home. They were able to quickly knock down the bulk of the fire, bringing it under control by 2:50 p.m.

Mutual aid was provided at the scene by the Amesbury, Georgetown, Groveland, Newbury, Merrimac, Newburyport, Rowley and Salisbury Fire Departments. Cataldo/Atlantic Ambulance, Rehab Five and air support unit from the Seacoast Fire Officers Mutual Aid District out of East Kingston, N.H., also responded. Station coverage was provided by the Boxford and Haverhill Fire Departments.

In-town support was provided by the Department of Public Works, Water Department, Police Department, Public Safety Dispatch, Inspectional Services and Dr. John C. Page Elementary School Principal Gregg Gilligan.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the West Newbury Fire Department, West Newbury Police Department and state Fire Marshal’s Office.
