Haverhill High School Hillies football plays Leominster High School to open the playoffs on the road Friday night.

The Hillies, ranked number 10 in the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Division I, are playing in the state tournament for the first time in 10 seasons. Haverhill’s record matches that of Leominster, ranked seventh, at 5-3.

Leominster fell earlier in the season, on Sept. 25, to Methuen High School, 7-10, a team Haverhill defeated 40-34 on Oct. 23.

Assistant High School Sports Editor for the Boston Globe Brendan Kurie said he would’ve ranked Haverhill sixth or seventh for the playoffs, due to the fact that Haverhill beat Methuen while Leominster did not.

Kurie said Haverhill nearly made it into the Globe’s top 20 high school football teams ranking.

The Hillies game starts at 7 p.m., at Leominster Doyle Field Football Stadium, 100 Priest Street Leominster.

Other Boston Globe insight gives Haverhill a number 23 ranking in the Boston Globe’s Dalton Division 1 rankings. The ranking, based purely off of team records, had the Hillies at 154-189-13 as a school for the 2025-26 academic year. Haverhill’s win percentage was 45.08 percent.

Kurie told WHAV how the process works.

“We spend a bunch of time making sure we have ever single score. Including the non-power-ranked sports, wrestling, swimming, track and field, cross country. So, we gather every score, we confirm them with the athletic directors,” said Kurie. “We even go back over the summer, after the school year, and double check every single score, and then it’s just pure winning percentage,” he added.

Whittier Regional Vocational Technical High School earned a number 13 ranking in the Globe’s Markham Division 1. Whittier finished the 2025-26 academic year with a total school record of 97-138-8. This put the school’s winning percentage at 41.56.
