National Night Out Returns to Haverhill Aug. 4, Rotates Event to 12th Ave. Playground

Haverhill Police are bringing back National Night Out in August and taking it to the 12th Ave. Playground for the first time

This is the first year National Night Out, described as a community-building campaign promoting police-community partnerships, will not be held at Swasey Field Park as the department moves to annually rotate the festivities between neighborhoods. The event typically features hot dogs, hamburgers, ice cream, games and a display of police, fire and ambulance equipment, community tables as well as a visit by the specially trained Essex County Sheriff’s office K-9 unit.

National Night Out takes place Tuesday, Aug. 4, from 5-7 p.m., at 12th Avenue Park and McNamara’s Field, Haverhill.

The department cancelled the public gathering last year because of a shortage of officers in the aftermath of the death of a man while in police custody.

Organizations interested in having tables at National Night Out are advised to email Officer Adam Durkee at [email protected] for information.

Besides Haverhill, other nearby communities plan similar events.

Methuen Police Department again plans a citywide event where neighborhoods host block parties to celebrate. Methuen’s National Night Out will also take place on Tuesday, Aug. 4, 6-8 p.m. Those interested in hosting a block party are advised to call 978-983-8635 to register.

For more information, individuals may contact Officer Mark Wilson at 978-242-1564 and [email protected].
