Soon customers waiting for a MeVa bus on its busiest routes will be able to relax on a bench under a shelter.

Merrimack Valley Transit, or MeVa, won a $241,104 grant to locate five shelters in Haverhill, one in Groveland, four in Lawrence, two in North Andover and four in Salisbury.

They join 15 shelters in Lawrence and four in Amesbury. MeVa Administrator Noah S. Berger said he is working with community planning officials to find the best locations. He said he hopes to have them installed by the fall of 2026.

“They will be painted in MeVa’s bright colors of orange and yellow and feature a rooftop solar collector so they will be lit at night,” Berger said.

The grant is part of a $6.8 million award to 34 municipalities and two transit authorities as part of that state’s Shared Streets and Spaces program. Merrimac received $99,016 which will be used to install four pedestrian-activated crosswalk beacons on Route 110, according to Select Board Chair Chris Manni. One will be place near the Merrimac Public Library, two others near the town’s elementary school and one at the Lake Attitash crossing on the Amesbury town line.
