The Beck, a new 290-unit apartment complex opposite the Bradford commuter railroad station, was christened Wednesday as officials from its development company, its architects and its contractor officiated at a ribbon cutting.

Taking the scissors to the red ribbon were Leah Maguire and Petros Filiogianni, The Beck’s first tenants.

Michael Procopio, CEO for the Procopio Companies, said he was thrilled the complex is complete and welcoming new tenants. He said his company appreciated the opportunity to build in Haverhill and that the city officials had helped smooth the project’s construction.

Procopio started leasing units in April with the first tenants moving in in mid-May. Currently 45 studio, one and two-bedroom units are rented.

“What drew us here was the location on the river,” Procopio said. “The location really spoke to us. It’s on a waterfront and by the bridge, which is a gateway to downtown. And the parcel was big enough for us to something on this scale.”

Plans also call for a restaurant and other retail spaces. Procopio said several restaurant operators have approached him, but Procopio has not found the right match.

“We are being picky because we have a vision of what we want here,” he said. “We need an operator who can provide delivery service to our residents as well as offer a menu that would be appealing to those using the park. Fortunately, we don’t have to sell Haverhill because it already has a thriving restaurant scene.”

Several city officials were in attendance including City Council Vice President Timothy J. Jordan and Councilors Ralph T. Basiliere, Devan M. Ferreira and Shaun P. Toohey. Haverhill Health and Inspectional Services Director Richard MacDonald attended with members of his staff as were state Reps. Andy X. Vargas and Ryan M. Hamilton in the crowd of 40.

Procopio Companies is headquartered in Middleton. It currently has eight other projects in various stages of construction including projects in Hull, Marlborough, Nantasket Beach and Londonderry, N.H.
