Whittier Birthplace is showcasing historic textiles in dresses and quilts during a two-part “Exploring Textiles” lecture series beginning Thursday night.
Carol Majahad, retired director of the North Andover Historical Society, talks about 19th Century Quaker dress during the period when John Greenleaf Whittier was living. She will talk about the fabric used to make dresses in general and also what she learned in closely examining a Quaker dress in the Whittier Birthplace collection. Majahad’s talk is Thursday, June 26, at 7 p.m.
In addition, Jane Bowers, former exhibits manager and curator at the Wenham Museum will discuss crazy quilts—why they were popular, what made them unique and what she has learned from studying a crazy quilt in the Whittier Birthplace collection. Bowers speaks Wednesday, July 23, at 7 p.m.
Both talks are free and take place at the Gus Reusch Welcome Center at the Whittier Birthplace, 305 Whittier Road, Haverhill.
