Eight Haverhill High Athletes Share in $28,500 Penta Golf Tournament Scholarships

Eight Haverhill High School student athletes were honored at the 29th Annual Penta Golf Tournament Friday, June 13.

“We were able to give $28,500 in awards this year to deserving students in honor of our friend, Charlie Penta,” organizer Sean Gleason said. “We are also making a $1,000 contribution to the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Haverhill in honor of Edward J. Fenlon Sr., who everyone knows as Mr. Fen.”

This year 344 golfers took part in the charitable event held at Far Corners Golf Course and the Bradford Country Club.

The winners of the Penta Trophy awarded at Far Corners were Ernie Lupi Jr., Ernie Lupi III, Craig Farley and Mark Casey. The winners of the Ted Murphy Cup at Bradford Country Club were Brian Murphy, Tommy Hinds, Kevin Murphy and Tommy Murphy.

The winners of the Penta scholarships were Brandon Piriano, football; Jack Baker, Golf; Pat McGowan, hockey, and Cale Wood Jr., wrestling. Lauren Downer won the Jean Ray Scholarship and the Tom Gagne Scholarship went to Hannon Wipff. The Haverhill Bank Student/Athlete Scholarships were awarded to twin sisters, Olivia and Emily Dicker.

Penta was captain of the 1980 Haverhill High School football team and considered to be one of the best wrestlers in New England. He was killed two months after graduation in 1981 in a car crash. Since 1996, his friends have gathered on the second Friday in June to reminisce and recall their friend. Some $177,000 in scholarships have been awarded in Penta’s name to date.
