Groveland-based Sweet Paws Rescue is eying a 69-acre Haverhill farm to continue its 15-year-old mission to help animals in need, while also preserving open land.

Sweet Paws Rescue, as WHAV reported in 2022, was discussed as possibly assisting Haverhill with its animal control shelter, said Tuesday it plans a $4.5 million capital fundraising effort that it calls “A Forever Home for Sweet Paws Rescue: Our Paw Print Is Growing.” While the group is reluctant to call attention to its proposed purchase, insiders say it is the site of Green Valley Farm on Marble Lane.

“We have always been committed to rescuing animals in need, while simultaneously focusing on the future—finding innovative ways to improve animal rescue and raise awareness about humane education in our community,” said Cynthia Sweet, founder and executive director of Sweet Paws Rescue, in a release.

The operation could begin as early as this summer to meet a growing demand and resolve limitations of its current Groveland animal rescue. The nonprofit added it is also up against an April 30 deadline to vacate its current location.

The new sanctuary offers a “larger, more comfortable environment for rescued dogs and cats to recover, improving their chances of finding loving forever homes;” provide the ability to add veterinary services; introduce educational initiatives aimed at teaching the next generation about animal welfare, compassion, and responsibility; strengthen collaboration with local animal control officers; provide a dedicated, safe living space for local cats awaiting adoption; and preserve open land.
