Haverhill is celebrating National Poetry Month with the return of Haverhill River Bards’ Poetry and Open Mic Night and launch of the Poetry Caravan Tour.
Haverhill River Bards’ free inaugural Poetry and Open Mic Night of the spring series features readings by members of the Haverhill High School Poetry Club. It opens with a featured reading followed by an open mic where all are welcome to share original works. A sign-up sheet will be available at the door for those interested in reading.
It takes place Wednesday, April 16, with doors opening at 6:45 and readings at 7 p.m., at HC Media’s Studio 101, 2 Merrimack St., Haverhill.
Organizers say Haverhill becomes a national hub for poetic and cultural exchange when the city welcomes the Poetry Bus as U.S. National Beat Poet Laureate Mark Lipman begins a 6,500-mile journey connecting communities across the country through poetry and the arts.
It features readings and performances by Lipman and a lineup of regional poets including Haverhill Poet Laureate Dan Speers, Maine Beat Poet Laureate Claire Conroy, Lee Eric Freedman, Mark Bohrer, Stephen Iannaccone, Kit Johnson and others.
The tour’s Haverhill stop, in collaboration with Creative Haverhill, begins Friday, April 18, from 5-8 p.m., at Cogswell ArtSpace, 351 S. Main St. Popcorn, interactive activities and Cogswell tours will be available.
