The TD Bank branch in Bradford at 860 S. Main St., as well as one location in Methuen is closing June 5 as part of the nationwide restructuring of the Toronto-based financial services company.
In all, 38 branches will close in the U.S. with four other Massachusetts locations on the list. They are in East Longmeadow, Framingham, Holyoke and Tewksbury. The Methuen location is a 547 Broadway. The company currently operates 125 branches in the state.
The TD branch at 153 Merrimack St. is not on the closure list.
Bank spokesman Jeffery Carns said in making the “difficult decision” to close branches, the bank was responding to “customer needs and preferences” as more consumers move to online banking and make fewer in-person visits to a retail location. Carns noted that at the same time the company is closing locations, it is opening a new branch in the Nubian Square neighborhood in Boston.
Carns could not say whether employees of the Bradford branch will be offered jobs at other TD bank locations. He did say the bank is working with customers who rent safety deposit boxes to make sure they retrieve their treasures or transfer them to another location before the Bradford branch closes.
The bank building, with its distinctive angular roof, opened as Family Bank several decades ago and became Banknorth in an acquisition in 1996. TD Bank later absorbed Banknorth.
