A new series of 11, free and guided hikes, offered by Essex County Greenbelt Association in partnership with Team Haverhill, begins next month.

The first hike, a “Winter Walk at Wheeler Woods on Chadwick Pond,” takes place Saturday, Feb. 22. Others planned will guide trekkers through Crystal Lake Conservation Area, Creek Brook Trail and Rurak Point in March; Crystal Lake Conservation Area, Crystal Gorge and Crystal Lake Watershed, April; a Children’s Educational Event at Tattersall Farm, May; Bailey Reservation on Chadwick Pond, June; Winnekenni Park, July; Merrimack River Urban Hike, August; Meadow Brook Conservation Area, Thompson Road Trailhead, September; Brandy Brow Forest Conservation Area, October; Viburnum Woods, Parsonage Hill and McPherson Woodlot, November; and Season Finale at Whittier Birthplace in December.

Wetland Scientist Tom Touchet’s guides the wintry walk Saturday, Feb. 22, from 9:30-11:30 a.m., at Wheeler Woods, 501 Boxford Road, Haverhill. The hike offers a one-mile walk along an old logging road that reaches a small rise overlooking Chadwick Pond. Touchet will show points of interest in the surrounding wetlands, marshy cove and large stand of trees near the water’s edge.

The hike is free, but registration which opens Friday, is required at ecga.org.
