Groveland Council on Aging, working with Monarch Care Partners, is offering a four-part, monthly “Getting to Know Dementia” series to shed light on the disease and offer help.
Classes are designed for caregivers, families and individuals curious about their own cognitive health as they age. Organizers say the free program goes beyond understanding dementia and equips participants with practical skills to navigate challenges and foster meaningful relationships.
“This series isn’t just for caregivers,” said Groveland Council on Aging Director Alyssa A. Lee. “It’s also for anyone who wants to learn more about how the brain changes with age and how to better connect with loved ones—or even prepare for their own aging journey. It’s about building a foundation of knowledge and compassion.”
The sessions are built around the Positive Approaches to Care curriculum, a framework that emphasizes understanding the changes in the brain and body to foster effective communication and care. Each session stands alone but builds on the previous one, creating a comprehensive roadmap for those navigating dementia or interested in proactive education about cognitive health.
Classes begin with “Normal vs. Not Normal Cognitive Change,” Tuesday, Jan. 28, followed by “What is Dementia?” Tuesday, Feb. 25; “Now What? Positive Approaches for Someone Living with Dementia,” Tuesday, March 25; and “Caregiver vs. Care Partner: Making Meaningful Change,” Tuesday, April 22. All sessions begin at noon and take place at Groveland Town Hall, Center Meeting Room, 183 Main St., Groveland.
To reserve a spot, those interested are asked to call 978-372-1101 or email [email protected]. Participants may bring their lunch and coffee and water will be provided. While attending all four sessions is encouraged, participants may register for individual classes as schedules allow.
