New Year’s Day brings the 34th annual First Day Hikes at 14 state parks, including a two-mile one at Harold Parker State Forest in North Andover.

The Department of Conservation and Recreation notes “Massachusetts is known for starting revolutions, so on Jan. 1, 1992 when 380 people gathered for the premier First Day Hike at the Blue Hills Reservation, it is no surprise that this Massachusetts outdoor initiative swept the nation…Today, all 50 states are offering First Day Hikes in state parks across the country!”

“We are a state of firsts, and the tradition of our First Day Hikes stands as a proud example of that,” said Gov. Maura T. Healey

The hike at Harold Parker State Forest starts Wednesday, Jan. 1, 10 a.m., beginning at Berry Pond Beach, 700 Middleton Road, North Andover. Hikers this year will receive a commemorative winter hat and pin.

Other hikes take place in Boston, Saugus, Rockport, Concord, Mashpee, Uxbridge, Gardner, Townsend, West Boylston, Worcester, Turner Falls and Chester. There is a flyer here.
