Poet Comeau Offers ‘A Note to Politicians on Beautiful Truth’ in Latest Work

Aristotle defined truth as “To say of what is that it is not, or of what is not that it is, is false, while to say of what is that it is, and of what is not that it is not, is true.”

Haverhill native and poet Raymond F. Comeau has been reflecting on the world around us—both the natural one and the one people create.

His latest work, “A Note to Politicians on Beautiful Truth,” speaks to the times and the intersection of suffering and words.

Now of Belmont, Comeau is a retired dean and current lecturer at Harvard University Extension School. He is also a trustee, emeritus, of the John Greenleaf Whittier Birthplace in Haverhill. He read some of his works last month when the Haverhill River Bards met in downtown Haverhill.

A NOTE TO POLITICIANS
ON BEAUTIFUL TRUTH

It should be called biblical
The suffering in recent years
From wildfires and floods
Droughts migrations
Covid germs and wars
Motley enough to overwhelm Job
Then words your words
If they’re armies of lies
Lined up
Torturing one by one
Beautiful Truth
What suffering they will cause
Think of Washington Adams
Jefferson the rest
Politicians like you
God is Truth beautiful and good
Would be their words
(And beware)
Victorious in the end
