Haverhill Kiwanis Club Plans Ninth Annual Turkey Drop Saturday, Nov. 9

WKRP news reporter Les Nessman, played by Richard Sanders, reports on the turkey drop.

As part of its mission, WHAV provides information and resources targeting health and wellness, food insecurity, after-school programs, education and housing to residents of Greater Haverhill and the Merrimack Valley. The Haverhill Kiwanis Club invites the public to participate in its Ninth Annual Turkey Drop and be eligible win prizes based on where rubber turkeys land on a grid of numbered squares. Each $10 ticket grants one square on the grid, with prizes awarded for squares hit by one of 100 rubber turkeys. Only 400 tickets will be sold, and a helicopter drop is planned, though an alternative method may be used if the helicopter cannot fly on the day of the event.

Often associated with what would become a legendary 1978 Thanksgiving episode of the television show “WKRP in Cincinnati” of a similar stunt gone wrong, the Turkey Drop takes place Saturday, Nov. 9, at 1 p.m., at Garrison Golf Center, 654 Hilldale Ave., Haverhill. Last-minute ticket sales will be available at 12:30 p.m. if tickets remain.

WKRP newsman Les Nessman reported the television turkey drop. “Oh my god, they’re turkeys. Johnny, can you get this? They’re crashing to the Earth right in front of our eyes. One just went through the windshield of a parked car. This is trouble. Everyone is running around pushing each other. Oh, my goodness. Oh, the humanity.”

Tickets are available at Haverhill Bank, 180 Merrimack St., Haverhill, Friday; Northwood Insurance, 293 Main St., Groveland; and Deborah Conner CPA, 8 Salem St., Bradford. Tickets are also available from any Kiwanian or online at birdease.com/turkeydrop2024.
