MakeIT Haverhill, a jobs-matching and career training program of Community Action targeted to the city’s Mount Washington neighborhood, is getting a $50,000 boost from the state.
State Sen. Pavel M. Payano said a check presentation took place Friday and was backed by the city’s legislative delegation.
“By offering English-language classes, workforce development and other critical services, MakeIt Haverhill is helping our most underserved residents gain the tools they need to thrive. Together, we are opening doors to opportunity, fostering resilience and building a stronger, more inclusive Haverhill,” Payano said.
His office noted the neighborhood is home to about 7,500 residents and faces “significant social and economic challenges, including the lowest homeownership rate and the highest unemployment rate in Haverhill,” adding, “With fewer amenities and limited spaces for residents to connect, the neighborhood experiences a pronounced ‘opportunity gap’ compared to the rest of the city.”
MakeIt Haverhill offers job fairs, English-language classes, digital literacy training and workforce development programs at 301 Washington St., in the center of Mount Washington.
Rep. Andy X. Vargas explained, “Investing in their work means connecting real people with job and career opportunities. Their job fairs have become a convening force for our community to not only find employment, but also receive wrap-around services that help them get back on their feet.”
Community Action President and CEO Kerri Perry said “MakeIt Haverhill is a space where magic happens. Where an open door can change lives. We support everyone, from those with disabilities to individuals seeking new opportunities, helping them take that first critical step. Our workforce development programs are essential in connecting people with the tools they need to succeed.”
