Community leaders last week celebrated a $50,000 state earmark to Haverhill’s Somebody Cares New England.
Sen. Pavel M. Payano presented a ceremonial check to the Mount Washington nonprofit organization during last week’s food pantry operation. Payano, who helped secure the earmark in this year’s state budget, highlighted the importance of continuing to support organizations like Somebody Cares New England.
“Somebody Cares New England embodies what it means to truly care for one another,” Payano said. “The work they do isn’t just about providing food, it’s about lifting people up, empowering them and treating them with dignity.” He thanked Sen. Barry R. Finegold, state Reps. Ryan Hamilton and Andy X. Vargas for their support.
Somebody Cares New England allows individuals to select items they need most, offering fresh produce, meats, eggs and dairy products to ensure that families receive nutritious and tailored support. Executive Director Marlene Yeo said the state support is vital, especially during the holidays. She explained the organization buys 300 turkeys for Thanksgiving and 300 hams for Christmas, noting, “This money helps ease the pressure on families during difficult times.”
Food Pantry Director and Community Liaison Nomsa Ncube added, “No child should go to bed hungry, and this funding helps ensure that.”
Haverhill Mayor Melinda E. Barrett, City Councilor Ralph T. Basiliere and staff representing Hamilton and Vargas were on hand for the presentation.
