L’Arche Boston North is looking for a downtown Haverhill site to house a public café to build on its vocational training for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
As WHAV reported first more than two months ago, the Haverhill-based nonprofit received one of the area’s largest grants, $500,000, from this year’s allocation by the Cummings Foundation. The group, whose culinary collaborative is known for its Home Made Hummus, said the group will use the grant over 10 years to extend its successful culinary vocational training program. In addition, it will provide “a place where neighbors can come together to share food and friendship—a space where everyone’s gifts are valued, where everyone belongs.”
“The Cummings Foundation’s generosity has been transformational for our community, allowing us to create amazing opportunities for adults with disabilities to learn culinary skills and share their gifts with the world,” Jennifer Matthews, executive director and community leader of L’Arche Boston North, said in a recent statement.
It was one of only 25 charities chosen to receive a larger amount to be used over 10 years. The remaining 125 nonprofits were awarded three-year grants of up to $300,000 each.
L’Arche Boston North is also well-known for it “The Longest Table” fundraiser. This year’s event, which takes place Thursday, Aug. 22, from 6-10 p.m., on Wingate Street, is already sold out.
