As state spending talks were wrapping up recently, area state representatives were joined by the House budget chief himself last week for a forum by the Merrimack Valley Chamber of Commerce.

House Ways and Means Chairman Aaron Michlewitz came to lunch Tuesday, June 23, at Salvatore’s Riverwalk in Lawrence. The House approved its version of the $58 billion state spending plan last April. It included a 1% increase in unrestricted local aid and increase local Chapter 70 education aid by $271 million to $6.86 billion. It ultimately had to be reconciled with the state Senate’s version and then approved by Gov. Maura T. Healey.

Michlewitz’s visit was organized by Rep. Frank A. Moran, representing parts of Lawrence and Andover. He was also joined by state Reps. Andy X. Vargas, Haverhill; Ryan M. Hamilton, Haverhill and Methuen; Tram T. Nguyen, parts of Andover, Boxford, North Andover and Tewksbury; Francisco Paulino, Lawrence and Methuen; Adrianne Ramos, covering all of Groveland and West Newbury and parts of Amesbury, Boxford and North Andover; and Dawne Shand, Merrimac, Newburyport and Salisbury and parts of Amesbury.

Chamber President Joseph J. Bevilacqua presented Michlewitz with a certificate of appreciation.

Last Saturday, the Merrimack Valley Chamber also joined with Bobby Brown of the Merrimack Valley Central Labor Council and Tracy Fuller of the Haverhill YMCA for a Touch-a-Truck and book drive to benefit the YMCA’s summer reading program. Vehicles on display at the Haverhill Public Works garage were represented by Route 110 Towing; Crescent Farms; and Haverhill Police, Fire and DPW.
