Essex County Greenbelt Association’s “Let’s Hike, Haverhill” series ended as it began at an historic property in a rural, wooded area of the city.
Those taking part in the early December finale heard poetry and hiked the grounds of Whittier Birthplace in Haverhill. As WHAV reported last February, the “Let’s Hike, Haverhill” series kicked off at Tattersall Farm, off North Broadway, and was intended to raise awareness of the city’s trail system
Trustee James Carbone, who read aloud Whittier’s “The Last Walk in Autumn,” said the hike at the birthplace of poet and abolitionist John Greenleaf Whittier centered on the Donald C. Freeman Trail and the perimeter of the upper field. Birthplace volunteer Tom Phaneuf led the hike.
Carbone and fellow trustee Jay Cleary were on hand to provide history of the more than 60 acres of the preserved farm property.
