Area residents who rely on help paying for home heating costs may be reassured by Massachusetts receiving more than $130 million in federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program money.

Congresswoman Lori Trahan yesterday applauded the awarding of $130.5 million to help keep Massachusetts families warm this winter.

“As we head into the winter months, this federal home heating assistance funding will help ensure thousands of families across Massachusetts can afford to keep the heat on,” said Trahan. “I’m proud of the work our federal delegation has done to secure this investment and to increase funding for the LIHEAP program, including through President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, so it can reach more households in need of help.”

Of the $130.5 million is $126.7 million typically awarded by a federal formula plus additional $3.8 million from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

Homeowners and renters in the Commonwealth are eligible for these home heating assistance funds if they earn 60% or less of the state median income, which is $45,392 for a single household and $87,294 for a family of four.

Community Action, 3 Washington Square, Haverhill, accepts applications from residents for help paying for heat. Besides Haverhill, the office serves Amesbury, Boxford, Georgetown, Groveland, Merrimac, Newbury, Newburyport, Rowley, Salisbury and West Newbury.
