A number of Haverhill High School’s graduating seniors received scholarships to aid in their continuing education at last Thursday’s Haverhill School Committee meeting.
The scholarships were handed out to those students by Haverhill High’s Assistant Principal Nelly Garcia Santana and School Superintendent Margaret Marotta.
The awards, which range from $271 to $2,166 and went to 43 students, came from three separate funds, the Marvin, Beatrice and Paul Brindis Scholarship Fund; Milhendler Scholarship Fund; and the Nicholas C. Johnson Fund.
Upon completion of the award ceremony, Committee member Scott W. Wood Jr. congratulated the recipients while Marotta gave them some advice. “Thank you to everybody. Congratulations. I think it is a total of $104,861,” Wood said. “That’s right and to clarify, it is a certificate. The check is in the mail,” the superintendent noted.

In addition, a ceremony was held to recognize this year’s Haverhill Public Schools retiring staff. As a tribute to those educators, school administrators came up with a new way to honor their legacy. Marotta explained.
“We thought what better way than to ask each teacher to select a book that they thought the students of their school would enjoy and ask them to write a little something in them to future students and then we’ll keep them in the libraries of their school as a memory of them and our appreciation to them.”
Ten educators and administrators were on-hand for the ceremony of 15 that will be retiring this year.
