Haverhill’s fourth adult-use cannabis retailer opens soon after being awarded its final license last week by the state Cannabis Control Commission.

Mellow Fellows, to be known publicly as “Mello,” received its retail license last Thursday. Commission staff reported the last of four retailers permitted so far in Haverhill completed construction at 330 Amesbury Road, Haverhill and was inspected Sept. 21.

Although proposed by Charles Emery, Timothy Riley and E. Phillip Brown, the store is now 91% owned by Wellesley-based Mass Invest Group with Arthur Becker and Alan J. Kanders listed as managers of the group.

As WHAV reported last January, Becker’s Mass Prop Invest bought the 330 Amesbury Road, Haverhill, property from Mac & D Realty, operated by Kathleen Darby and her brother, City Councilor Michael S. McGonagle, for $1.35 million. The Amesbury Road building was built as a restaurant in 1982 and is currently appraised by the city at $397,900. It sold was to Mac & D Realty, operated by Kathleen Darby and her brother, City Councilor Michael S. McGonagle, for $605,000 in March of 2019.

When the Haverhill City Council approved Mellow Fellows’ special permit in August of 2019, traffic was the top concern raised by neighbors. At the time, Councilor Joseph J. Bevilacqua voted against it and McGonagle abstained given his then status as landlord.

Attorney Jim Smith told WHAV last January the store has the potential to earn more than $1 million a month.
